Tanzania: SMS Features and Restrictions

2020 Elections

Given the upcoming elections in Tanzania, we have received a notice from the local mobile operators regarding a regulator directive that bans all non-essential bulk SMS notifications from October 24th - November 11th. Non-essential SMS include all SMS that are not for E-Government services, public safety, utilities and financial services.

You should ensure that messages are transmuted strictly adhering to the approved campaign timing as specified in the Election Code of Conduct issued by the National Electoral Commission.

Telemarketing/Bulk messages with Political content SHOULD NOT be transmitted on the General Election Day.

Nexmo boasts direct connections with Tigo, Zantel and Vodacom Tanzania. Through them we can reach the other operators.

Sender ID:

64005 Airtel - All alphanumeric sender is supported; Numeric sender will be overwritten to "NXSMS" to ensure delivery for all networks.

All other network sender ID will be overwritten with either 'SMS', 'Info', or 'NXSMS' in order to ensure delivery.

Content:

There are no additional content restrictions beyond those in our Acceptable Use Policy
